Jomo Tariku’s Zulu Stool draws inspiration from the dome-shaped Zulu huts, also known as beehive huts, which are commonly found in South Africa, Eswatini, and Botswana. These traditional huts feature exteriors crafted from woven thatch grass and twine, which tightly press down the material, creating a dense, waterproof roof that offers protection from the elements. The intricate weaving process not only serves a functional purpose but also represents a communal activity, bringing people together and adapting the structure to the local climate. The Zulu Stool reflects the distinctive lines that fan out from the top of these huts, with Tariku’s design accentuating this visual effect through the use of alternating materials, such as mahogany and maple.

“I aim to cultivate a lifelong appreciation for elevated modern African design, and to inspire a deeper and fuller connection to the continent. I weave the continent’s nature, art, and history within each piece I produce. Every design tells a unique story, with no detail overlooked or undervalued.” —Jomo Tariku
