Tariku conceived his Ashanti Stool as a modern take on Akan chief ceremonial seats used in Ghana. Growing up in Ethiopia, Tariku was drawn to the eclectic art and furniture pieces that his father collected from all over Africa. A modern reimagination of the Golden Stool, Tariku’s stool combines two powerful symbols from the Ashanti Kingdom: the curved seat calls on the royal and divine throne of the king, while the circular base pays respect to the round golden regalia worn by the leader responsible for spiritual purification. The Golden Stool is one of the most sacred and symbolic objects of the Ashanti people, who are part of the Akan ethnic group in Ghana. According to Ashanti belie to Ashanti belief, the Golden Stool represents the soul of the Ashanti nation, its unity, and the essence of the Ashanti people. It holds immense cultural, spiritual, and political significance.
“I aim to cultivate a lifelong appreciation for elevated modern African design, and to inspire a deeper and fuller connection to the continent. I weave the continent’s nature, art, and history within each piece I produce. Every design tells a unique story, with no detail overlooked or undervalued.” —Jomo Tariku
