PHILADELPHIA- Artist, activist, spoken word poet, and educator Roberto Lugo has become a major figure in contemporary ceramics. His third exhibition at Wexler Gallery, Back and Forth: Red and Meth, has Lugo sharing the space with collaborators Griff Jurchak and Kyle Mello Dixon. Lugo reimagines the gallery space as a shop filled with functional and wearable items such as lamps, bowls, clothing, sneakers, and prints. Shown alongside his signature ceramic sculptures, Lugo’s functional art solidifies his reputation for making art that is alive and meant to be lived with.

Before Yesterday We Could Fly: An Afrofuturist Period Room

METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART- Roberto Lugo’s artwork will be exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in a fictitiously reimagined period room opening November 5. Featuring art and craft objects made by celebrated Black artists and makers, the immersive installation offers an imaginative and inspiring alternate history for a community that was forcibly displaced for the creation of Central Park. Commissioned by The Met specifically for this environment, Lugo contributed a highly ornate and monumental urn honoring Harriet Tubman called Digable Underground.
