AVAILABLE NOW UNTIL AUGUST 2ND

ORDER INFO

Artist and activist Roberto Lugo has created a debut, limited-edition Nike Air sneaker series, entitled Stunting, with Garrixon Studio in Philadelphia. Two styles of hand-painted, signed Nikes, an Air Force 1 Mid and and an Air Jordan 4, are being made in a limited edition of 15 each.

Renowned for his porcelain works, Lugo’s work is a hybrid of European and Asian ceramic traditions with 21st century street style vernacular.  The two styles feature a mash-up of hand-painted ceramic motifs rendered in vibrant colors and patterns. Each pair is painted by hand by the artist, assembled by Garrixon’s master craftspeople in Philadelphia, and accompanied by an artist-made collectible wood and ceramic box and a signed print of the sneaker pattern.

“My work is focused on reframing cultural hierarchies that have historically been reinforced by the type of iconography typically associated with porcelain, which in 18th century Europe was more valuable than gold – I love reframing this linage in a light that uplifts Black and Brown cultural icons of today,” states Lugo. “For my debut sneaker collection, I was drawn to the colors and patterns from my community and the visual vocabulary that has been so influential in my life, which leads me back to the shoes we coveted growing up. Stunting represents a clash of where I was and where I am: embedded in these shoes are histories of cultures past and present.”

A portion of the proceeds will benefit The Clay Studio’s community engagement program, Claymobile, which brings a “pop-up” ceramics studio to schools, community centers, and other social service agencies throughout the Philadelphia region.

Roberto Lugo is an American artist, ceramicist, social activist, poet, and educator. Lugo uses porcelain as his medium of choice, illuminating its aristocratic surface with imagery of poverty, inequality, and social and racial injustice. Lugo’s works are multicultural mashups, traditional European and Asian porcelain forms and techniques reimagined with a 21st-century street sensibility. Lugo is the recipient of the 2019 Rome Prize, and was awarded a 2019 Pew Fellowship. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, The High Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, The Walters Museum of Art, and more.

Roberto Lugo started working at a factory at the age of 14. His first paycheck went straight to a new pair of sneakers. A fresh pair of kicks served not only as an asset to style, but also spoke an unheard message. Specific sneakers like the Air Jordan 4 served as an icon and status symbol in his hometown community.

Garrixon is a footwear design and manufacturing studio in Philadelphia with a mission to create the world’s greatest sneaker playground. Garrixon’s team of designers and craftspeople strives to disrupt the status quo of the sneaker industry, making it more inclusive and demystifying the process.
