Retrospective Remix: Looking Back at Twenty Years in Old City

OCTOBER 7, 2022 – JANUARY 31, 2023
PHILADELPHIA

Wexler Gallery celebrates more than two decades of pioneering design and art in Old City Philadelphia with Retrospective Remix: Looking Back at Twenty Years in Old City, an exhibition of work exploring moments in the gallery’s history, in anticipation of their move to the Fishtown neighborhood in Spring 2023. Retrospective Remix opens on October 7, with a First Friday reception 5-7pm.

Wexler opened in Old City in 2000 with a show of work by renown glass artist Dale Chihuly, and quickly earned an international reputation as a specialist in secondary-market contemporary glass. Since then, Wexler has expanded to represent artists and works that coexist in the worlds of design, fine art, and craft. Wexler Gallery represents a wide range of artists, from the internationally regarded to emerging talent. By no means comprehensive, Retrospective Remix provides a peek into the past, recognizing Wexler’s history and influence, and setting the stage for what’s to come.

Highlights of the exhibition include major movements and artists championed by the gallery: Studio Furniture by Michael Hurwitz, Wendell Castle, and Garry Knox Bennett; Contemporary Glass by Andy Paiko and Gregory Nangle; Fine Art by Richard Serra, Marilyn Kirsch, Edward McHugh, Louise Nevelson, and Tim Rollins and K.O.S.; Contemporary Ceramics by Peter Pincus, Roberto Lugo, Trish DeMasi, and Malcolm Mobutu Smith; 3D Printed Design by Materialize MGX; Studio Glass by Dale Chihuly, Mark Peiser, Joel Phillip Myers, Harvey Littleton, Dante Marioni, Dominick Labino, and Klaus Moje; and Contemporary Design by Eric Slayton, Ruben Van Megen and Sharon Sides.

Unique objects, innovative furniture and limited-edition pieces are shown alongside work by established and lesser-known visual artists in a boundary-blurring presentation that is Wexler’s hallmark. Retrospective Remix will be on view through January 31, 2023.

In Spring 2023, Wexler Gallery begins a new chapter in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia, opening an 11,000 square foot space at 1811 Frankford Avenue. This former pretzel factory is being transformed by DIGSAU, the architecture firm that recently designed The Clay Studio’s new home in the nearby Kensington area.

Challenging traditional labels, Wexler Gallery exhibits artwork that coexists in multiple disciplines and traditions. Questioning and testing the boundaries of craft, design, and fine art, Wexler aims to present work that consistently celebrates formal innovation and conceptual content as much as aesthetic beauty. Wexler Gallery opened in 2000 in the historic district of Old City in Philadelphia and expanded its presence to New York City in 2018. Since its inception, the gallery has proudly showcased extraordinary work by both established artists and the emerging talent of today.
