The Meedo Wallpaper design is a continuation and further experimentation of Jomo Tariku’s Meedo Chair, which was first made with 16 layers of walnut veneer and was commissioned by the Metropolitan Museum for their Afro-Futurist Period Room installation, designed by Hanna Beachler. This bench was constructed with the same technique used to create the chair: each tine comb segment is individually crafted by Tariku on a separate mold and are then combined and shaped to create a “walking finger” look.

The Afro Comb is an enduring icon of Black experience and history. Jomo envisioned the Meedo (Amharic for “comb”) to combine the rich history of the Afro Comb with the African symbolism of a chair (or stool) as an object signifying leadership.

“I aim to cultivate a lifelong appreciation for elevated modern African design, and to inspire a deeper and fuller connection to the continent. I weave the continent’s nature, art, and history within each piece I produce. Every design tells a unique story, with no detail overlooked or undervalued.” —Jomo Tariku
