Taking its cue from the Dogon spiritual leader’s prestige seat, the Dogon Stool recounts the Dogon cosmology of the sky and earth, supported on two ends, leaving the center open for exploration and interpretation.
A Dogon stool is a traditional seat crafted by the Dogon people of Mali in West Africa. These stools are often considered more than just functional furniture; they are also cultural artifacts with significant symbolic meaning. Typically carved from a single piece of wood, Dogon stools are known for their simple, circular seat and sturdy base. Used in ritual or ceremonial contexts, they signify status within the community. They are admired for their craftsmanship, geometric forms, and the symbolic meanings attached to the figures and patterns carved into them.
“I aim to cultivate a lifelong appreciation for elevated modern African design, and to inspire a deeper and fuller connection to the continent. I weave the continent’s nature, art, and history within each piece I produce. Every design tells a unique story, with no detail overlooked or undervalued.” —Jomo Tariku
