Artist Statement

My sculpture stems from my work on paper. I am inspired by the action of nature and time upon materials such as stone and wood. I am fascinated by hollow places in solid bodies or surfaces. I work with marble, slate and plywood slabs. By drilling and grinding out holes, I try to create an organic surface that seems transformed by a natural process. Based on the circle, the holes often aggregate to form light or dense colonies of cells, acting as shelter or enclosure. This lends the work a sculptural space that can appear either positive or negative. I want the viewer to be able to visually penetrate the surface.
