Artist Statement, The Matrix Series

The Matrix Series are pieces are generally identified in two ways. Some are formal studies, using simple geometric shapes and volumes as a basis for compositional study as in “Circular Construct….”. In another direction, narrative is developed from a verb. These form are more object based, using recognizable everyday icons as a model to begin. The Windsor Chair piece titled “Across a Crowded Room….” is a metaphor for the verbs, to sit or rest.

The structure is simple, moving to complex, and very time consuming to build. All pieces are flame worked, Corning Pyrex rods. They are fashioned in a way to form an organic, interconnected structure of which almost any shape might be realized. The idea came from looking at a couple of things. One was an exposed root structure of a tree or plant. The other was pile of rebar building rubble from a razed building. From these images, making forms from that organic matrix was revealed. The original concept and constructions techniques were more or less developed by me. It became apparent that it would better enable me to develop the ideas by enlisting the aid of someone who could help with some of the tedious part of the construction. I must acknowledge the patient and fascile help of Jon Cotterman and Scott Goss amongst others who have learned and aid in this evolving construction idea.

As with other bodies of work I have been involved with, I am interested in the ambiguous nature of glass and the sense of space and volume one can create. Of course the study of how light is controlled and affects form is an utmost curiosity. These new explorations offer a new way of approaching inquiry into mysteries revealed.
