STATEMENT

I observe, question and examine the nature of relationships; how personal perceptions and romantic interactions have been eternally influenced by society and culture.   As I gather and recount stories and rituals, I explore the connection between historical and societal pressures and our thoughts and reactions, clearly the subject of art, craft, music, literature, games and toys. In my work, I use text, repetition and the cultural symbolism of clothing to expose the resulting struggles between the external and internal self.   The manner in which I compose my work and each element of the work--materials, images, content and process--are carefully planned to give clues to the personal and collective realities of our longings, presumptions and predicaments.

I choose to work with traditional craft making materials that embody and evoke the past, such as vintage papers, books, magazines, aprons, linens, lace, buttons, handkerchiefs and dress patterns.   These are deconstructed and then transformed and embellished using sewing, gluing, crocheting, knitting, embroidery and beading.   Text is almost always used to create cohesiveness between content and materials.   The words can be provocative, humorous, ironic, and often, unsettling.
